Better Hearing Health for the New Year starts with well-maintained hearing aids!

Hearing aids play a vital role in connecting those of us with hearing loss to our loved ones, our friends, and co-workers, and even to entertainment like music, movies, and television shows. Considering how important they are in our daily lives, investing a few minutes each day cleaning and caring for them will keep them running smoothly for many years to come and maximize their performance. Here are a few hearing aid cleaning tips to help you get the most out of your devices:

  • Clean off the dirt and ear wax. Using a small brush and a clean, dry towel, gently brush off the microphone and the part that goes in the ear canal (receiver, custom mold, etc) then wipe down the rest of the hearing aid.
  • Remove ear wax from the tip of the receiver and vent if applicable (for custom molds or custom hearing aids) using the appropriate tools. Change the wax filter. Check your user guide if you need more details.
  • Remove any moisture. Since moisture can easily build up in the hearing aid, especially during the winter due to snow sports and outdoor activities such as snowmobiling and snowshoeing, using a dry-aid kit overnight (or for a few hours a week) is a good idea! Consult us if you don’t have one and would like to know more about them.
  • Lastly, follow the instructions in your hearing aid user guide and your Audiologist’s advice! Different types of hearing aids have specific cleaning instructions that are more specific than general guidelines.

If you often worry about keeping your hearing aids dry, you may want to consider a waterproof and sweat proof hearing aid.
